Our Vision

We are working to build theory on the drivers and constraints of robust and resilient water systems, in order to develop widely applicable heuristics for climate change adaptation. We focus on 3 important questions:

01.

What characteristics in the natural, social, and built environment interact to make strategies succeed in one place but fail in another?

02.

How do alternative physical, economic, and social metrics promote different approaches such as robustness versus flexibility?

03.

What are the tradeoffs and synergies in addressing short-term system shocks (e.g. floods) versus long-term risks (e.g. droughts)?

We draw on tools in network science to study these properties in the abstract, and then build cross-institution collaborations to compare a large number of real-world water systems. The result in a powerful combination of theory and data to revolutionize our water systems.
