Greta Markey Awarded Stanford Impact Labs Fellowship to Advance Water Affordability Research

Fletcher Lab PhD candidate Greta Markey has received the Stanford Impact Labs Emerging Scholars Fellowship, a summer program that supports Stanford PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in developing collaborative, practice-oriented social science research. The fellowship provides a stipend and professional development programming to help scholars work with partners across the public, private, and social sectors.

Greta’s fellowship project focuses on improving water affordability in California. As water bills rise, low-use households can sometimes bear disproportionate costs from infrastructure investments driven by high-use customers. In collaboration with water utilities, Greta is developing the Framework for Accountability in Infrastructure Rates (FAIR), a practical toolkit to help utilities evaluate whether rate structures distribute costs equitably and identify financial interventions that make water more affordable for households most in need.
